Literally meaning the Central Province, it is the ancient Avanti Mahajanapada, whose capital Ujjain arose as a major city during the second wave of Indian urbanization in the sixth century BCE. With a large tribal population & its geographical location it is often referred to as the heart of India. Three sites in M.P have been declared World Heritage sites by UNESCO; The Khajuraho Temples (1986), The Sanchi Stupa (1989) & the Bhimbetka Caves (2003).
