]]> Sujani is a distinctive embroidery tradition of Bihar, particularly practised in Muzaffarpur district and surrounding villages. Traditionally, women recycled worn-out cotton saris and dhotis, layering them and joining them with dense running stitches to create quilts, blankets, baby wraps and ceremonial gifts. Unlike purely decorative embroidery, Sujani is known for its narrative character, depicting village life, nature, rituals and everyday experiences, while contemporary works often address women’s rights, education, healthcare, environmental issues, dowry and child marriage. The craft saw a major revival in the late 1980s through ADITHI, which helped women adapt Sujani for wider markets and generate income from home. Today, it is used for quilts, wall hangings, garments, bags and other lifestyle products while retaining its characteristic dense hand embroidery and storytelling. Sujani received a GI tag in 2006, recognising its regional identity and cultural significance.
